Old Krakow Offers Polish Food Close to Home

By Rebecca Dennison
Staff Writer

Old Krakow (pronounced “kra-koof”) offers authentic Polish cuisine complimented by primarily Polish staff. It was named after Krakow, one of the largest cities and former capital of Poland. The ambiance is comforting with different lamps atop each table providing the lighting, in addition to numerous piece of artwork dotting the rose colored walls.

The long awaited visit to Old Krakow was made on a weekday evening. The menu was in Polish with English translation. The waiter promptly greeted us and continued to provide excellent service. After taking our drink orders, which included a Polish beer, we were provided with fresh complimentary bread.

I opted for a dinner salad and potato dumplings with mushroom sauce. Although the latter is considered lighter fare, the generous portion made it seem like more of an entrée and I even had leftovers. The salad dressing was refreshing and reminded me of the tzatziki sauce found on gyros. My husband opted for the cream of mushroom soup, which I had read about online, and the Crakovian cutlet, which is chicken breast rolled with ham, Swiss cheese, and spices (similar to Cordon Bleu) accompanied by vegetables and potatoes. The soup had an abundant amount of mushroom pieces and was definitely the best mushroom soup either of us has ever had.

For dessert, I opted for the Polish poppy seed cheesecake. It was good, but may be an acquired taste, so next time I will likely go with the regular cheesecake, chocolate mousse, or…

Old Krakow came recommended and understandably so! Although the entrée prices were a bit higher than what I usually pay, the entire experience was worth it and I plan to return soon. For vegetarians, there are several options from the lighter fare and fish from the entrées.

Parking is not difficult or alternatively, it is accessible by Muni lines K, L, and M.
