Sheba Piano Lounge – Great Atmosphere, Great Music, Great Food By Nony Nwaneri Are you looking to dine at an Ethiopian restaurant close to home that I personally believe meets the term the “BEST”? Sheba Piano Lounge, located in the historical and well-known Fillmore Jazz District, is a Beautifully decorated restaurant that plays Elegant, live music, Specializes in service that is prompt and friendly, and serves Tasty and reasonably-priced food from a selection of Italian, American, Mediterranean, and of course Ethiopian cuisine. And did I mention that the restaurant is great for groups of up to twenty people? You wonder why my housemates and I are smiling above? Because we had such a great time celebrating my birthday at Sheba Piano Lounge on a Thursday night. As soon as you enter the restaurant, you hear live piano tunes and you are welcomed by a beautiful ethnic woman from Ethiopia, whom I later discovered was the owner of the restaurant. When I informed her of my party size of eight, she recommended that we dine in the lounge area rather than at the tables. What a great recommendation! The lounge area consists of three comfortable leather sofas that are situated in front of an enchanting fireplace. We took advantage of the setting by taking a lot of pictures – both fun and silly. Moving on to the diverse menu, you will be impressed by the wide variety of food offered. We settled mainly on Ethiopian food and some of our favorites dishes included the Beg Alecha (tender pieces of lamb braised in green pepper, and flavored with an Ethiopian herb sauce, ginger, rosemary and a touch of jalapeno pepper), Doro Tibs (boneless pieces of chicken sautéed and seasoned with an Ethiopian herb, Awaze sauce, hot peppers and onions), and the Shrimp & Slice of Sirloin meat over Tumeric rice, accompanied by a serving of gomen (collard greens cooked in Ethiopian spices) – all served family style on a huge platter to share. A non-Ethiopian dish that I recommend is the Sea Bass (a delicate fish entrée accompanied with peppers, tomatoes, garlic, onions and sage in a white wine sauce). The food is delicious and on top of that the quantity is sufficient for what you pay. Because we were full from a great meal, we were not able to get to some of the yummy deserts. I hear that the rich chocolate cake is divine! In sum, Sheba Piano Lounge is the place to visit if you are looking for fine quality dining at an Ethiopian restaurant. I should also mention that the restaurant is equipped with a full bar with seating just in case you are with a couple of friends and you want to try the Sheba Sunrise, a tangy cocktail that consists of La Pinta Pomegranate Infused Tequila. If you are lucky as we were on our visit, there may be even a live band that will sing a few melodies and entertain while you dine. Live band or not, Sheba Piano Lounge is highly recommended on my list of restaurants. You will not be disappointed but only come to realize why my friends and I are smiling. Sheba Piano Lounge |
