Lime Tree The New Lunch Spot on Irving By Baotran Vo and Lauren Wu On Sunday evening, we gathered with our friends to eat at Lime Tree, a small underground (literally) restaurant with a bright purple exterior. Its sidewalk level windows naturally capture the curiosity of pedestrians. Inside, we saw the display case with sample dishes that provided a nice visual supplement to the written menu.
A self-identified "Southeast-Asian kitchen," they serve Singaporean, Indonesian and Filipino dishes. Since there were seven of us, we were able to try many different dishes. Everyone agreed the Singaporean roti pratha was an excellent appetizer. The flaky, yet chewy dough with curry dipping sauce was reminiscent of naan. Unfortunately the potato cakes were bland and received mixed reviews — and only because one diner normally enjoys bland food. Most of the other entrees that we ordered were not particularly appetizing in general. For example, the "pork spareribs in tangy soy-vinegar sauce" were only lukewarm in temperature and served with too little rice to balance the overly salty flavor, although there was a tiny amount of spinach accompanying the ribs. The "beef rendang," beef cubes slow-cooked in Indonesian spices, was more enjoyable with its tender texture, despite the same problem with saltiness and too small a rice portion. However, on a more positive note, all those who tasted the "Singaporean curry noodles" highly praised it and would definitely recommend it to others. The glass noodles were well coated with the flavorful curry sauce and accessorized with slices of mushroom. The service was very friendly and accommodating, allowing us to order a half salad even though it was not listed on the menu. The ingredients were fresh, and the orange bell-pepper pieces were an especially nice accompaniment. In addition, free cold water was available. Nevertheless, we were surprised when the hot tea was also served in disposable styrofoam cups, which seemed out of place in the cute restaurant setting. The lime green walls, complementary table candles and mirror decorations evoke a cheerful atmosphere. Overall, we would recommend this restaurant for a convenient, affordable lunch stop.
