Cozy, Romantic Dining at Firefly

By Asal Sadatrafiei

Only a 10-minute drive from the Inner Sunset, Firefly Restaurant is Noe Valley's little secret. If you are looking for a nice place to go for a special occasion or enjoy a romantic dinner, this is the perfect restaurant for that. With dim lights and candles at each table, the ambiance is mellow and conducive to a private dining experience.

Appetizers are reasonably priced under $10 and entrees ranging from $15.50 to $21.50. If dining Sunday through Thursday, the prix fixe menu is available for $32 per person, including any appetizer, entrée, dessert and hot tea or coffee. Wines are also available by the glass or bottle. We chose a Napa Valley merlot, which was a nice complement to the meal. Each table received bread along with the spread of the day, which was green pea with sun-dried tomatoes in our case. The spread was quite tasty and a nice change over salted butter.

The entrée list is mouth-watering. I chose the roasted halibut filet with potatoes and sautéed spinach for $21.50. My date selected the pan roasted hanger steak with mashed potatoes and arugula salad for $21.00. The presentation of the meal was fancy and the taste even better. The sides were tasty and matched the main course well. We both finished every last savory bite of food.

Now for dessert. This restaurant features a separate pastry chef, so we could not resist ordering a sweet course to end the meal. The dessert menu is a bit pricier than most, but well worth it. We shared the warm chocolate truffle cake with vanilla bean gelato for $7.75. It was delicious to say the least and worth the wait for preparation. We both wanted more when we finished the dessert.

The service was unremarkable, but the staff is professional and friendly. The restaurant location is in a quiet neighborhood. There is also seating at the counter.

The restaurant opens at 5:30 p.m. seven nights a week, with the last seating at 10 p.m. I recommend making reservations several days in advance when planning a Friday or Saturday night dinner, since the restaurant seats only 60 and tables don't come easy. The eatery thrives on returning customers and keeps them coming with an evolving menu that allows for new items weekly.

Street parking is available.
