Go Go Cafe And Restaurant: Chinese Seafood And More

By Joanna Yeh
Co-Food Editor

Go Go Cafe and Restaurant opened about two years ago, serving a huge variety of Chinese dishes with an emphasis on seafood. Located at 19th and Irving, Go Go is only a short Muni ride away from the Parnassus campus. It is relatively small and quaint with low-key interior decorations, but what it lacks in atmosphere it surely makes up for in food taste and price.

I first discovered Go Go by walking past one afternoon and realizing how good the prices really were. One of their most popular special dishes is the ginger onion crab for an astounding $6.95. Trust me, there is nowhere else that you can get a whole cooked crab for such a great price. The crab can also be cooked with garlic for the same price. The crab is on the small side but is definitely worth it at such a low price. The crab is always fresh, as they get new shipments daily and they have aquarium tank in the restaurant to keep all their seafood fresh. Chinese people believe that when eating seafood, you should keep the seafood alive until you are about to cook it, thus ensuring freshness and quality.

For weekday lunches, Go Go has daily specials at fantastic prices ($3.95-$4.95). These lunch specials are listed on the outside of the restaurant in the window, so be sure to keep your eyes open for them. I recommend the asparagus with rock cod over rice. The rock cod is soft, fresh and tender. It is the perfect compliment to sauteed asparagus and black bean sauce.

I also would suggest the beef chow fun (dry style). Unlike most other Chinese restaurants, Go Go's chow fun is cooked really dry, meaning that there is very little oil. Their chow fun is unique in its taste. The dish can also be made with chicken or seafood and is stir-fried with onions and leeks. It is a very flavorful dish that is not too salty and the perfect texture.

Another unique thing about Go Go is their variety in dishes. They have over 120 dishes on their menu! I especially enjoy their selection of Shanghai dim sum that is available everyday, not just on the weekends. If you have never had Shanghai dim sum before, be sure to order the sweet soy milk, scallion crepe and steamed mini meat buns.

Finally, Go Go is open daily from 10 a.m. until 1 a.m. These hours make it flexible to get great tasting Chinese food at anytime, whenever you have a craving. Go Go Cafe and Restaurant is a laid back, low key Chinese restaurant with great tasting dishes at some of the best prices in town.
